Xin Shao
Member, Patent Attorney

Xin Shao is a registered patent attorney whose practice focuses on patent prosecution before the USPTO in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and the computer technologies around them. His prior experience has focused on that work for leading technology companies and research universities, including the invalidity and infringement analyses that support patent litigation, enforcement, and freedom-to-operate assessments.
His prosecution work spans the AI stack, including generative image models, GPU and accelerated computing infrastructure, natural language processing, computer vision, and computer architecture, as well as the fields that surround it: audio and video processing and codec technologies, computational imaging, biotechnology enabled by AI, autonomous vehicle and sensor systems, cloud computing, and the Internet of Things. Trained as a mathematician, he reads inventions at the algorithm level and drafts claims around how models are actually built, trained, and deployed.
Xin Shao is a legal engineer of Anderswerden and develops its legal technology.

Tim Tau Hsieh
Advisor, Patent Attorney*

Tim Tau Hsieh's practice is patent and trademark prosecution, and the analysis around it: eligibility, claim construction, validity, infringement, and freedom to operate. He has worked on every side of a patent matter — at Am Law 100 firms and IP boutiques, at one as a partner; as a patent examiner, and as a detail clerk at the Patent Trial and Appeal Board to the most senior Administrative Patent Judge; as a judicial law clerk in the Eastern District of Texas, the Northern District of California, and the Western District of Oklahoma; and as a law professor. He was named a Super Lawyers “Rising Star” three times, an honor extended to no more than 2.5 percent of California attorneys.
As a GS-13 business-methods examiner he decided subject-matter eligibility under 35 U.S.C. § 101 and examined applications in FinTech, blockchain, cryptocurrencies, and artificial intelligence. On detail to the Board he clerked on inter partes review, and he has taught patent, intellectual property, antitrust, and technology law. He has seen how examiners allow claims, how the Board reviews them, and how trial judges construe them.
He trained as an engineer before he trained as a lawyer, at UC Berkeley and UCLA, then at UC Law SF and Berkeley Law, where he earned an LL.M. with a law-and-technology certificate. He was the twenty-first Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the Patent and Trademark Office Society — the first Asian American in that role in the journal's century — chaired the Patent and Trademark Office Society's legislative committee, and writes on claim construction, patent venue, NFTs, and AI.
